Hi everyone!
So between the months of April-June, I slaved over a "how to draw manga/anime" tutorial book, courtesy of
Walter Foster Publishing.
How To Draw My Manga World by Jeannie Lee
The book is geared towards beginning artists who'd like to experiment and learn more about the Japanese anime/manga style; it covers basic principles of drawing, including subjects like basic anatomy/proportion, to other subjects like finding inspiration from life, and how to set up basic manga pages.
I personally learned a lot from working on this... not to mention, 3-4 straight months of nothing but drawing, lots of adrenaline @_@; It was quite painful, actually... I'd work at Gaia all day and then spent an additional 6-8 hours every evening working on illustrations and text... didn't get much sleep during those months... o3o;;;
The artwork is also nearly a year old now - you know how when you look back at your old art you're like, "WTF WAS I THINKING" (and I really wish I could go back and fix some of my mistakes, but oh well.) For what it's worth, I did my best at the time, and the experience was a valuable one. XD More interestingly though, working on a tutorial book really makes you think about your own processes; much of what I learned I figured out through self-exploration and experimentation, so when I had to actually explain some of the things I kinda figured out "on instinct," it proved to be somewhat difficult. The biggest problem was that I had to condense a lot of information - I basically had one page per topic, and as many of you know, drawing anime-style (or anything, really) takes knowledge, patience, and experience...
In any case, I hope the book proves to be helpful, especially to beginning artists who feel they can't find many resources. If you pick one up, let me know what you think, and please feel free to ask any questions - if you'd like "expansions" to any of the subjects covered in that book, I'd be more than happy to oblige as well. XD
